The California Supreme Court has declared that Catholic Charities must defy its own religous beliefs (provide free contraception to its employees) because Catholic Charities is engaged in "secular" activities. Those activities are operating soup kitchens and aiding the homeless. Therefore, says the court, Catholic Charities cannot be protected by the 1st Amendment. If you follow the logic of the court all the way through, churches are now only permitted to stand in a corner and pray, it seems, for the 1st Amendment to apply.
